In this installation, the butterflies adorned with woven patterns inspired by Miao culture are transformed into an ‘avatars of beauty’ fluttering in the interplay of light. It underlines the flow of vision and space while portraying the delicate strength and ceaseless cycle of life. Zhou Li answers to the frailty of human life with butterflies, an organism at the base of the food chain, and equals the possibility of spiritual transformation to the metamorphosis of the insect. This is a call for our continuous betterment. While all lives on Earth are ephemeral, vitality and spirit remain in the flow of time.

Butterflies at the bottom level of the food chain are transformed here into the ‘avatars of beauty’ dancing in the interplay of light to pinpoint their delicate strength and the perpetual cycle of life. Human beings are vulnerable in the scheme of things, therefore we must seize the day and strive for a better future.

Zhou Li

Born in Hunan in 1969, Zhou Li graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in oil painting in 1991 and went on to live and work in France. She returned to China in 2003 and has since based in Shenzhen. She specializes in mixed media painting and installation, with an eclectic approach to materials and forms while staying true to her aesthetic and artistic roots. Synthesising tough strength with ethereal romance, her works push the envelope of contemporary aesthetics with a sense of humanistic concern that gives rise to the subtle and dynamic details of her works.
